Apple removes 540,000 discontinued apps from its App Store in the third quarter
The latest numbers from Finbold show that Apple removed 540,000 discontinued apps from its App Store in the third quarter of this year.
Apple continues to remove old apps from the App Store. The number of apps remaining in the Store fell to a seven-year low in the third quarter of 2022.
According to a Finbold report, the number of apps in the App Store was 1,642,759, down 24.79% from the second quarter of 2022. Note that the number of apps was most recent in the third quarter of 2015, when the number of apps was 1,672,271 .
After removing these apps, Apple ranked second in the total number of app stores in the third quarter, with Google and its Play Store taking first place with 3,553,050 apps, and Amazon third with 3,553,050 apps. 483,328 requests.
It is believed that reducing the number of apps in the App Store will not mean closing the Store; It's part of Apple's plan to remove old apps from the App Store. In April, the company sent developers a notice that it would begin removing apps that have not been updated for a long time.
In the second quarter of this year, the American tech giant acquired about 439,000 offline apps due to a lack of updates for years. Approximately 64% of applications have not received an update for two years.
Finbold, which focuses on stocks and cryptocurrencies, sees a link between the decline in the number of apps in the last quarter of 2022 and the decline in App Store revenue.
However, Eric Woodlin, an analyst at investment firm Morgan Stanley, said Apple customers are spending less on apps due to inflation and other economic concerns. Gaming revenue was reported to be down 14%, while total revenue was down 5%, the biggest drop since Morgan Stanley began tracking data in 2015.
It should be noted that removing apps from the App Store will not affect the content previously downloaded on the user's device, so in-app purchases are still in progress. But it doesn't look like these apps will receive future updates.
