Iran's Atomic Energy Agency said on Sunday that a mail server in one of its branches was hacked in a foreign attack, saying it was aimed at drawing attention to protests over the killing of Massa Amini.

For weeks, Iran has seen protests that erupted in the wake of the September 16 death of 22-year-old Amini after she was arrested by ethics police on suspicion of violating a woman's dress code.

Street violence resulted in dozens of deaths, mostly protesters but also security forces, and hundreds of protesters were arrested.

The IAEA admitted in a statement that its subsidiary company for the development and production of atomic energy had been hacked, but it downplayed the importance of the documents.

"These illegal acts come out of desperation to attract public attention and create a media atmosphere and psychological activity," the statement added.

After years of negotiations over the nuclear program, Iran reached a landmark agreement with world powers in 2015. The agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, provides relief from sanctions against Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program.

But the agreement was derailed by US President Donald Trump's unilateral withdrawal in 2018, but since April 2021, intermittent talks about the agreement have returned to try to revive it.
