Sony invests heavily in multiplayer games |
Sony has announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Montreal-based Haven Studios, which was founded and directed by video game designer Jade Raymond.
Raymond is best known for helping develop Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs, as well as building Ubisoft Toronto and EA Motive studios.
A little over a year ago, Haven Studios and the original Japanese company announced a partnership. But the company is now working on Haven Studios as a PlayStation studio. The transaction price was not disclosed.
“The first game from Haven Studios is an all-new AAA multiplayer game with a vision to build an organized and evolving world of freedom, excitement, and fun that will entertain and engage players for years to come. It is unclear when this will be playable,” Raymond said in a blog post.
According to the press release, the game appears to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The head of PlayStation, Jim Ryan, said the game showcases the power of the PlayStation 5.
While Raymond said we intend to take full advantage of the incredible potential of the PlayStation 5 platform to create new worlds that inspire and connect gamers in new ways. The acquisition also means that Sony owns the first PlayStation studio in Canada.
Sony buys Haven Studios
The acquisition of Haven Studios comes after the Japanese company announced that it had acquired Bungie, creator of American video games Destiny, both of which indicate Sony's intent to take a major step forward in live gaming.
“Investing in live games allows us to create bigger worlds,” said Hermann Holst, President of PlayStation Studios. "It also allows us to create meaningful social connections between players."
Sony has had huge financial success with live games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone. Therefore, he wants to bring his style of gaming to the PlayStation platform.
Raymond founded Haven Studios after running Google Stadia game studio, which the search giant closed last year. She has also held key positions at studios such as Electronic Arts and Ubisoft.
