Samsung officially introduces the Galaxy S22 range |
Samsung has announced the new Galaxy S22 range, with which the South Korean giant is trying to correct some of the flaws of the Galaxy S21 range and re-establish it as a powerful flagship smartphone.
The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus have 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch flat screens with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels.
Samsung is the first phone manufacturer to use Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front and back of the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus.
Both phones are available in black, white, green and what Samsung calls rose gold. Both phones are available for pre-order now and will be available on February 25th. Prices start at $800 for the Galaxy S22 and $1,000 for the Galaxy S22 Plus.
Both come with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM. A larger 256GB model is also available. But it's still the same amount of RAM.
Among all the usual spec upgrades, camera performance is what really sets the company apart. The 50MP main camera has a sensor that is 23% larger than the one on the Galaxy S21.
Both phones also have a 10MP telephoto lens (with 3x optical zoom) and 12MP ultra-wide cameras.
The company claims to have made great strides in night photography. She said the pictures are more detailed now. Part of the reason is also pixel binning and Samsung's adaptive pixel technology.
The company is also touting significant improvements in portrait photography. She says she can now distinguish individual hairs to keep the subject sharp and blur the background more precisely.
Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus screens have a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. However, depending on the display, the refresh rate can increase up to 10Hz to extend battery life.
Samsung is working on improving the camera and performance
The company says it uses a new Vision Enhancer algorithm to maintain sharpness and color saturation even in bright lighting conditions.
The Galaxy S22 Plus has a brightness of 1750 nits. But you can only get there in direct sunlight. The Galaxy S22 has a peak brightness of 1,300 nits.
Both phones are powered by the US-based Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. However, as usual, they contain Exynos chips in some international markets. Both phones run Android 12 and Samsung's OneUI 4.1 interface.
The Galaxy S22 has a 3,700mAh battery while the Galaxy S22 Plus has a 4,500mAh battery.
The Galaxy S22 also has slower charging speeds, and is limited to 25W wired charging, and the Galaxy S22 Plus can go up to 45W. Both provide up to 15W of power via wireless chargers.
Samsung increased its software commitment to four years with major OS updates. This extended support period applies to Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy S21, Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.
Galaxy S22 Ultra is another name for Galaxy Note
The company also released the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which claims to be the Galaxy Note phone but uses a different name. The phone offers a 6.8-inch screen, an integrated S Pen, and a camera array for $1,200.
Besides the stylus mode, the Galaxy S22 Ultra gets additional camera upgrades for low-light photography and portraits, faster wired charging, and all the upgraded components you'd expect in a 2022 flagship phone.
The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and Exynos 4 and features a 6.8-inch OLED display with a 120Hz variable refresh rate.
Other spec upgrades include Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front and back, 45W fast wired charging (15W wireless more), and a 1TB version. Built-in 5000mAh battery 5G Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 6E supports IP68 standard.
Pin response time increased from 9ms to 2.8ms. The algorithm that predicts the path users will draw with the stylus has also been improved, according to Samsung, with better handwriting recognition (including in dozens of other languages).
The Galaxy S22 Ultra also supports air-pin actions, such as flipping through the gallery or controlling the phone's camera remotely, without touching the screen.
You still get a 108MP main camera, 3x and 10x telephoto cameras, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 40MP selfie camera.
The improvements focus largely on low-light photo and video capabilities. It is now possible to take selfies in night mode, and users can take high-resolution photos in night mode.
The phone is available for initial order from now, and comes in black, white, green or burgundy. The device goes on sale on February 25 in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions. The 128GB model has 8GB of RAM. While the rest of the versions include 12 GB.
