Russia is not responsible for cyberattacks on Ukraine

The Russian Embassy in the United States said, through its official account on its Twitter platform, that Russia denied the allegations of the United States that it was responsible for cyber-attacks on Ukrainian banks and government websites, saying that they were unfounded.

"We categorically reject these baseless statements by the government and note that Russia has nothing to do with the above-mentioned events and, in principle, has not and will never carry out malicious operations in cyberspace," the statement said.

The United States and Britain said on Friday that Russian military hackers were behind a series of DDoS attacks that briefly crippled Ukrainian banks and government websites.

Washington is trying to hold Russia responsible for its aggressive actions in cyberspace. This came according to a statement by Deputy National Security Adviser Anne Newberg to reporters at the White House.

“Russia likes to work in the shadows and relies on a long-term selection process,” Neuberg said. With this in mind, we quickly map DDoS attacks to attacks. We believe that the Russian government is responsible for this week's massive attack on Ukrainian banks.

Neuberger added that US data showed that infrastructure associated with Russian military facilities, commonly referred to as GRUs, forwarded many connections to IP addresses and domains in Ukraine.

British officials also announced that the GRU was almost certainly involved in the DDoS attack. These attacks work by flooding the target page with large amounts of data.

"This attack demonstrates the continued disregard for Ukraine's sovereignty," the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a statement. The campaign is another example of Russia's crackdown on Ukraine, and such subversive behavior is unacceptable.

Russia denies involvement in DDoS attacks

Kiev blames Moscow for the DDoS attack. Tensions have risen since Russia began massing its forces near the border. This raised concerns that Russia was planning an attack. The Kremlin has denied plans for another invasion of the country.

Ukrainian officials described the outage as the result of the largest DDoS attack in Ukraine's history. However, US company Netscout said the traffic was modest compared to digital attacks recorded elsewhere.

Neuberger said the effects of DDoS attacks are limited. But the latest wave of digital activity could be a precursor to a more harmful cyber attack with more incursions into Ukrainian territory.
