Galaxy S22 uses plastic from discarded fishing nets |
A few days later, Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy S22 range, and it seems that the South Korean giant has come up with a new material for the product, which is a plastic material made from discarded fishing nets.
The company says it will soon add recycled ocean plastic to its entire product line, and the first example will likely be the Galaxy devices that will be shown at its Unpacked event on Wednesday, February 9.
It is not clear where these materials are used or which parts of the product are. Samsung also did not specify how it fit into the design of the device.
Quoting a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 640,000 tons of fishing nets are dumped into the ocean every year. According to Samsung, the nets are a threat to marine life and coral reefs.
"These neglected fishing nets are disturbing the delicate balance of our environment at an alarming rate," the company wrote in a blog post. Collecting and reusing these nets is an important first step in keeping our oceans, our planet and our future clean together.
While this is a small step, Samsung wants to emphasize it more when it unveils its new Galaxy devices on Wednesday.
Huge leaks about the Galaxy S22
The Galaxy S22 and S22+ stick to last year's design with some tweaks and focus on upgrading their camera hardware.
The Galaxy S22+ Ultra's camera hardware is the same as last year. But its appearance has been almost completely overhauled, inspired by the now discontinued Galaxy Note series.
The Galaxy S22 + Ultra has a rectangular camera body and Samsung found a way to remove the large camera bump. The back is mostly flat with the camera lens only.
The cameras themselves use the same sensors as last year (plus an ultra-clear glass lens), but image processing has been improved. The phone is a bit wider and has an S Pen with room for a stylus inside the phone.
The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ look basically the same. The standard model comes with a 6.1 inch screen. This makes it smaller and its battery supports up to 25W of charging power. The other two have up to 45 watts.
Phone prices in Europe are the same as last year. Although all phones in the US come to $100.
