Biden administration allocates $ 5 billion to support electric cars |
The Biden administration this week unveiled a plan to give states $5 billion over five years to fund electric car chargers.
It is part of an infrastructure package that includes $7.5 billion to build a nationwide network of electric vehicle charging stations.
This investment is part of the government's broader agenda to combat man-made climate change and promote the transition to clean energy.
The Biden administration has described electric cars as being easier to operate on Americans than gas-powered cars. He promised that by 2030, half of the cars sold in the United States will be electric or hybrid.
The new policy will help countries install electric vehicle charging stations along designated alternative fuel lanes on the national road network.
And this is despite the fact that sales of electric cars in the US have increased in recent years. But the transportation sector remains one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. The sector accounts for nearly a third of emissions each year.
By 2030, 24% of new cars sold worldwide are expected to be fully electric. The United States is the third largest electric vehicle market in the world after China and Europe.
"If we can't get rid of people's fears of range, we won't transition to electric cars fast enough," the energy secretary said. We must also allow people to charge their cars wherever they are, where they work, and wherever they want.
President Joe Biden has said that projects to build charging stations could save the average electric vehicle driver up to $1,000 a year in fuel.
America wants to switch to electric cars
Countries have until August 1 to submit plans to deploy electric vehicle infrastructure to the Office of Energy and Combined Transportation. This is part of a plan called the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Recipe Scheme.
The Federal Road Administration has until September 30 to approve eligible plans.
This helps America lead the world in electric cars, the president said earlier this week in a speech aimed at encouraging American companies to expand the electric vehicle infrastructure in the United States.
"So far, China has been in the lead," Biden added. But this will change. In fact, the United States is building a reliable and functional national general cargo transportation network. So you can quickly and easily charge your electric vehicle anywhere.
The government had previously proposed an electric vehicle stimulus package that would save extra money for consumers who buy electric cars made by union workers.
The government has also pledged to replace its federal fleet of 600,000 cars and trucks with electricity by 2035.
A nationwide network of charging stations means less pollution, more jobs and cleaner cars. It also makes electric cars a viable option for more working families.
