Honor, the former sub-brand of Huawei, has announced the launch of its first foldable smartphone, Honor Magic V.
An image promoting the device's design was shared on Weibo and Twitter accounts, which shows a clear connection between the two halves of the device.
The Weibo article mentioned that the foldable flagship will be launched soon, but the exact release date has not been announced.
Honor has publicly stated for a while that it is hoping to come out with a foldable version. The company's CEO, George Zhao, had already expressed interest in producing foldable devices under the Honor brand in 2019. However, he feared that the device might be too expensive for the company's young target market.
In June of this year, it was reported that the company is developing such devices with foldable display panels from BOE and Visionox.
Samsung is the first company to switch from polyimide film to ultra-thin glass via a foldable smartphone.
There aren't many details on what exactly the Magic V could take, but according to reports, it could have a foldable 8.03-inch internal screen and a 6.45-inch external display.
Honor did not reveal the exact release date
These are devices similar to the Samsung Z Fold (which can be converted from a phone to a tablet) rather than the Z Flip (which folds into a smaller phone).
It's also the debut of the previous parent company of Huawei Honor and Mate X2. Although this honor has been independent for a year now. Thus, it is not clear how similar the next gear will be to Huawei.
The company has joined a growing number of companies that have launched or are planning to launch their own foldable devices. Samsung and Huawei are among the first to join the service. But we have recently seen foldable devices from Xiaomi, Motorola and Oppo. Oppo Find N was officially released earlier this month.
In addition to Honor, there are rumors that Google is planning to release up to two foldable phones in the near future.
