Apple delays Universal Control release to spring 2022 |
Apple's global control feature has been pushed back to the spring of 2022, and the company's website has been updated to indicate that the drag-and-drop feature won't be available until this spring.
Universal Control was originally released with macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15 at WWDC in June.
This feature is designed to connect Mac and iPad devices so that users can use a single mouse and keyboard to drag and drop content between the two devices at the same time.
However, this functionality is not yet applicable to macOS or iPadOS. Apple has not yet started making Universal Control available to developers or beta users.
Now on the updated features pages for iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, the company says it may release Universal Control this spring.
So far, there is no common control over all versions of macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15.
The company previously updated its website in October to indicate that Universal Control may launch later this fall. But a few days after the official fall end, it looks like the company won't stick to that schedule again.
Universal Control isn't the only major feature that has been delayed since Apple's 2021 software update was first released. This year's notable software feature, SharePlay, wasn't available when iOS 15 or macOS Monterey was released (the feature was released for iOS on October 25). Other secondary functions are also not accessible.
Although users will have to wait a few more months for comprehensive control, they can use Sidecar + iCloud Drive for a unified experience across Mac and iPad.
Another delay in one of Apple's coolest new features
On the other hand, the company released macOS Monterey 12.1. This is the first major update for macOS Monterey, which was originally released in October.
The macOS Monterey update can be downloaded on all supported Macs via the Software Update section of System Preferences.
Apple has also released the macOS Big Sur 11.6.2 update for users who are still using macOS Big Sur. It has also released security updates for macOS Catalina users.
macOS Monterey 12.1 adds SharePlay functionality. SharePlay allows Mac users to watch TV, listen to music, and play games with friends and family over FaceTime.
