The first step to jailbreak PlayStation 5 |
A year after the PlayStation 5's release, hackers have unlocked the platform's debugging mode and access to tools to decrypt some of their firmware, which is making strides with jailbreaking.
Hacking organization Fail0verflow for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 claims to have been able to obtain the root user key of the platform in order to decrypt the gaming device's firmware.
In addition, Andy Nguyen (a Google theflow0 security engineer who had already hacked into the PlayStation Vita) had access to the PlayStation 5 platform debug settings menu.
These are usually reserved for the development team so that companies can test their games. But its appearance on the PS5 may indicate that TheFlow0 has discovered some kind of PS5 core vulnerability.
In the past few years, Nguyen has collected nearly $20,000 in prizes for raising safety concerns for Sony.
Considering their theoretical access to the platform software, these two phases deserve to be highlighted.
Decrypted firmware could allow hackers to reverse engineer the PS5 software and create types of hackers that allow installing Linux, emulators, and even pirated software on previous Sony platforms.
The first crack in the Sony firmware
It's clear that Sony has to work hard to stop users from doing these things. In addition to trying to plug security holes, it should do everything in its power to prevent these vulnerabilities from affecting a wider audience.
For now, these two steps won't have much impact on PS5 users. Jailbreaking is not available for PS5. Neither theflow0 nor Fail0verflow has released any details about their hacking attacks.
It is not clear if they would like to disclose more information about how these things will be achieved in the short term.
Nguyen said he has no intention of revealing his hack. Although Fail0verflow has stopped sharing PlayStation 4 hackers until Sony can fix the problem. This means that the PlayStation 5's hacking paradigm is unlikely to change.
PlayStation 3 was released in 2006 but was not pirated until 2011. Similarly, PlayStation 4 was released in 2013 and jailbreaking method became popular in 2018.
