Self-driving cars are safer than traditional driving |
Baidu, China's leading search engine and artificial intelligence provider, has long advocated self-driving cars and promised that they are safer than traditional driving.
Vice President Baidu and chief operating officer of the Intelligent Driving Division said that self-driving vehicles are safer than human-controlled vehicles.
"Compared to human drivers, self-driving provides a safer and more reliable driving experience," he added at the Shanghai Future Mobility Forum. Technology does not guarantee that accidents will not occur.
Comments at the China International Import Expo at the China International Import Expo should clearly allay consumers' concerns about the safety of self-driving technology after the fatal driver assistance system accident in August.
Baidu launched Apollo, the world's largest open source platform for autonomous driving, four years ago and is a leading developer of self-driving vehicles.
In January this year, the Beijing-based technology giant founded Jidu Motors. It is a project with Geely and plans to launch its first mass-produced electric car in 2024.

It is widely expected that the next generation of vehicles will use digital technologies. Artificial intelligence, voice control, and the Internet of Things, for example, are making cars smarter.
On August 12, a 31-year-old businessman was killed in an accident that raised concerns about the safety of the NOP navigation system installed in the ES8 car assembled by Chinese startup NIO.
The National Media Office said the accident occurred while using the NOP system, a driver assistance technology that typically uses algorithms to analyze traffic data collected by sensors in real time.
Environmental sensors can help a vehicle determine if it is passing a slow vehicle. However, this process still requires manual intervention.
Shandong Provincial Police is investigating the case with the help of Wei Lai. None of them made a statement to explain the cause of the crash.
Most of the driver assistance technologies in use today are assigned to the second level. This is based on the Society of Automotive Engineers rating system. Full automation without manual intervention is the fifth level.
Some smart car owners say drivers may consider the driver assistance vehicle to be completely autonomous. If the seller does not inform them of the risks.
Baidu said the Apollo platform will take into account vehicle safety opinions. It constantly improves technology, management, and data analysis to provide more convenient and efficient transportation services to consumers while ensuring safety.
