Amazon confirms support for the Matter Smart Home standard |
Amazon has confirmed that it supports the Matter smart home connectivity standard and announced in a blog post that it supports Matter over Thread in Echo devices and Eero WiFi routers.
Eero previously confirmed his support for this standard. Amazon said the announcement was intended to increase its commitment to Matter and advance the smart home's concept of flexibility, privacy, collaboration and interoperability.
In addition, the company has served on the boards of Google, Samsung, and Apple's Thread Group for 5 years.
Like wireless, Thread is the main Matter protocol. It provides low power, low bandwidth, and low latency mesh network for smart home devices.
The company has confirmed that the fourth generation of Echo will support the material via thread and will support other Echo devices in the future.
Earlier this summer, Amazon announced that most Echo smart speakers will be updated to support Matter, including most Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Studio, Echo Show, Echo Plus, and Echo Flex.
The Eero Pro, Eero Beacon, Eero Pro 6 and Eero 6 all have threaded radios. They act as edge routers to which thread devices are connected. They won Matter's support the following year.
Matter is an IP-based application protocol that can create a common language and model for the interaction between smart home devices and the ecosystem.
Smart home standards apply to Echo and Eero . devices
Material support via thread and wireless networks in the Echo device. Alexa users should be able to connect any Matter-enabled smart home device to their Echo speaker and control it with the Alexa app and Alexa Voice Control.
Eve's name has been verified on a list of companies that work with Amazon. Eve makes smart home devices like sensors, sockets, switches, and lights and so far only uses Apple's HomeKit. But with Matter, its products can be connected to Alexa and other smart home systems.
Amazon also names Yale, Wemo, Schlage, Sengled, Netatmo, Nanoleaf, Tuya, eWeLink, and Leedarson as brands that make it to thread hardware.
One of the main promises of the material standard is control by multiple intermediaries. This means that you should be able to use any other controller to control any Amazon smart home device that supports the command.
SmartThings, Google and Apple are committed to the issues. Hence, in theory, you could use these companies' apps and voice assistants to control your Amazon smart home devices.
There are currently no significant hardware available for purchase as the standard is still under development. However, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance, smart home products that support Matter should appear later in 2022.
