Intel is trying to regain its position in Alder Lake

Intel's 12th generation Alder Lake chips have arrived, ushering in a new era of the company's chips, led by its flagship Core i9-12900K processor, which the company promises is the best gaming processor in the world.

The company has been teasing Alder Lake chips since CES 2021 in January and revealed more details about the details of its hybrid architectural approach on Build Day in July 2021.

There are currently three new chipsets, led by the Core i9-12900K processor, which provide a total of 16 cores (divided into 8 performance cores and 8 effective electronic cores) and 24 threads.

Therefore, the processor can use Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology to reach frequencies up to 5.2GHz. Compared to the 11th generation chipset, the company promised a 19% performance increase thanks to the new P-Core architecture.

There is also a Core i7-12700K (12 cores, 20 threads, 8P, 4E cores) and Core i5-12700K (10 cores, 16 threads total, 6P, 4E cores).

Each of these three new chipsets offer a KF version, which means that the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 lowers the price.

Intel also uses newer chips to provide a lot of forward-looking support for more advanced standards. The three new chipsets offer up to 20 PCIe slots (split into 16 PCIe 5.0 and 4 PCIe 4.0), support for DDR5 memory (simultaneously supporting older DDR4) and the most significant L3 and L2 cache sizes.

And Alder Lake needed a motherboard based on the latest Intel Z690 chipset that offers more modern conveniences like 6E WiFi support and faster USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 data transfer.

The company is using a new LGA 1700 socket here, so you may even need new coolant.

12th Gen Intel Alder Lake Chip Coming

The company is also aggressively promoting Windows 11 as a major part of the Alder Lake family of products and has found that it has worked with Microsoft to improve Intel Thread Director to better handle common tasks when using the new operating system.

The 12th generation product line marks the biggest leap forward in desktop chips in years, and also marks the start of the company on a new path to developing its best chips.

The new variety outperforms the manufacturing process by 14 nanometers. The company has been using a sixth-generation Skylake chip since it was first introduced in 2015.

The new 12th generation chip was brought to market via the newly renamed Intel 7 process. It was formerly known as the third generation of the 10nm process, or enhanced ultra-fine.

As explained by Intel, the new Alder Lake chip represents a new version of the company's x86 chip, and this method is very similar to the one used by Arm for many years.

Rather than relying on putting as many efficiency cores as possible into a single chip. The Alder Lake chip combines a power core and an efficiency core to achieve a combination of performance and efficiency.
