Google is giving your Android tablet another chance |
Google announced the launch of a new version of Android designed specifically for large screens such as tablets and foldable devices, called Android 12L, which aims to create the Android 12 experience for devices with large screens.
Android 12L is primarily designed for tablets and foldable devices. But Chromebook users also benefit.
At this year's Android Developer Conference, the company announced the upcoming update for large-screen devices, including tablets, foldables, and devices running Chrome OS.
Since its release, the company has worked hard to bring the Android experience to the big screen. He then retracted the changes made with the Honeycomb version.
Since then, the company has released Android tablets such as the Nexus 10 and Pixel C. However, the experience of these devices has been criticized for bloating the mobile interface.
Unmodified Android tablets (like the recently released Nokia T20) still have this problem.
Android 12L solves all the problems by offering multiple functions to enjoy a bigger screen. The company is adding a new dual-panel notification center for tablets and foldable devices instead of a large, space-consuming notification center.
This allows users to quickly view, set, and interact with notifications at a glance. There's a new taskbar, reminiscent of a traditional laptop shelf, and an iPad operating system for quickly switching between apps.
The split screen is getting better, and Google is also planning to add more drag and drop functionality.
Google uses Android 12L to optimize Android for big screens
The company recommends developers create user interface versions that match each device's window size category and add reference devices so that programmers can display their layout on mobile phones, tablets, large indoor foldable screens, and desktop computers.
For foldable devices, Android 12L introduces an API that allows developers to alert their apps to hinges or other restrictions and use them as natural dividers.
This means that if supported, you may be able to use apps like Kindle and display a two-column layout when your device is folded and switch to full screen mode when your phone is unlocked.
While these tweaks aren't as big as Android 12. They make using Android a better experience on a bigger screen and provide a solid foundation for tablet makers.
Android 12L is scheduled to hit the market early next year. However, you can try out the new features beforehand via the Android 12L developer overview page. You can download an Android 12L emulator to get started.
The company also said it is working with manufacturing partners to roll out the Android 12L update and provide a developer preview version of Android 12L for the Lenovo P12 Pro tablet.
The company does not have any devices that can take advantage of Android 12L. However, there have been reports of Pixel Fold devices.
Famous leaker Evan Blass has raised the possibility of a foldable Pixel device before the end of the year. If Google is looking to bring Android 12L to any device, its futuristic foldable device might be the perfect candidate.
