Cisco enters the augmented reality conferencing arena

Cisco has launched Webex Hologram, a service that introduces augmented reality technology into its collaboration platform. Conference attendees appear as realistic 3D images rather than animated glyphs.

Webex holograms are used with augmented reality headsets (such as the Magic Leap and Microsoft HoloLens) and are designed to deliver realistic holograms of real people in real time.

The company has significantly improved Webex's suite of products over the past year, and the coronavirus pandemic has increased demand for virtual collaboration tools.

Webex is a giant in the crowded collaboration market. But competitors like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams have helped the market grow rapidly.

Cisco said the use of holograms made the experience more engaging and realistic. With Webex's 3D hologram feature, attendees can now interact in ways that were previously only possible in person.

The company stated that its mission is to enable 3 billion digital workers around the world to participate on an equal footing around the world.

Webex Hologram is an important step towards its mission to provide a seamless work experience so that there is no gap between virtual collaboration and face-to-face collaboration.

The global security deal against the coronavirus pandemic has increased business demand for immersive virtual meetings.

When introducing new surgical devices, for example in the healthcare sector, physicians, technicians, and sales and support teams must be trained quickly.

Using holograms from Webex, this training can be manipulated remotely to save time and travel, while also providing the ability to view surgical equipment from all angles and at full size, as if it were in the room with the doctor.

Webex holograms are currently only available to a limited number of beta customers. The company focuses on discovering use cases and applications with customers and integrating feedback through the software. Then he plans to expand the offer.

Other features of Webex holograms are:

  •     Unlike 2D and virtual meeting experiences. Webex holograms create a sense of symbiosis by presenting realistic 3D images of real people in real time. For participants, this means a more engaging and authentic experience rather than using an avatar. This has a huge impact on training and problem solving.
  •     Webex Hologram presentation can share both physical and digital content so users can create and collaborate together.
  •     The solution supports a remote sharing experience for multiple users. Every user has a multi-dimensional experience at the same time. This is in contrast to other displays that limit the use of single-angle displays.
  •     Webex hologram is compatible with leading augmented reality headsets. Such as Magic Leap and Microsoft HoloLens.

Webex hologram enhances from Webex Collection. This allows remote operators to use any AR headset of their choice for an immersive experience.

Over the past year, Webex has launched nearly 1,000 new features and devices and continues to innovate with new technologies.
