ROBLOX starts checking the age of young players |
Roblox offers its users optional age verification that combines identity verification and photo scanning.
Although the system should not play most platform games. But for those looking to get the platform's next voice chat feature as soon as possible when it launches this fall, this is a must.
In addition, the company said that in the future, developers will be able to create new experiences based on identity verification.
The verification system acknowledges that many of the platform's primary users are not teenagers. When the company launched the new spatial audio feature earlier this month, it said 50% of its users are now over 13.
It also saw the largest increase in the age group from 17 to 24 years old. Spatial Voice allows players to have real in-game voice chat, initially available to 5,000 developers (every 13 or older) who can test voice chat in a specially designed Roblox community area.
The company said the rollout of the feature to the platform's broader user base is progressing slowly as it requires parallel development of new monitoring tools and security features. Age verification is now one of those tools.
Age verification is divided into two stages. First, users of the platform use the app to scan their ID cards, driver's licenses, passports, or other government identifiers.
The company said it will not retain the original information from the identity document. Instead, an anonymous value is generated that allows the platform to verify identity without compromising the true identity of the user.
Roblox verification is optional, but some features may be required
ROBLOX compares document data with a library of thousands of global document types to determine if it is legal.
After scanning, the user takes a selfie for review instead of uploading a selfie, which the system can automatically cheat.
The profile picture matches the person in the document. The platform said the process will take a few seconds after the photo is taken.
The company noted that developers and developers can also use verification as a token of trust when searching for employees.
Age verification will be introduced gradually and will reach all users in the coming weeks. Subscription functionality is available to anyone aged 13 and over in more than 180 countries around the world via computers and mobile devices.
