Microsoft: Surface Duo gets Android 11 |
Microsoft announced the new Surface Duo 2 running Android 11 earlier this month, and the company has now committed to releasing an operating system update for the device.
A company spokesperson said: “We are committed to providing updates to the Surface Duo and are working hard to get Android 11 to existing customers before the end of this year.
Previous reports indicate that the update may arrive in the summer. But when we went into the fall and didn't get into the company's Surface business, it was clear that it was taking longer than expected.
Surface Duo will ship with Android 10 in September 2020, while Android 10 will run for a full year and Android 11 will be released.
I hope the company can quickly update the device to the latest Android version. But this did not happen. The 2-year-old continues to use Android 10.
Android 11 natively supports dual-screen devices such as Duo. So this should improve the software experience on the device.
When testing the Surface Duo 2, Android 11 appears to have made minor changes to Microsoft's multitasking system rather than bypassing it.
Surface Duo 2 now assumes that the correct screen is the default primary screen. However, it is not clear if the same changes will be made to the original Surface Duo.
Microsoft plans to update the device later this year
Although the company has introduced several updates for the Surface Duo. But it is still a problem.
Surface Duo users often complain about issues like multitasking, gestures, screen off in book mode, and fingerprint reader locked.
Android 11 comes with Google's move to Android 12. Android 12 is set to hit Pixel devices soon, and it's not clear when the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 will be updated. Microsoft previously promised the Surface Duo three years of OS and security updates.
Just in case this software giant wants to be taken seriously as an Android manufacturer. One thing you need to establish is a good track record of reliable and timely software updates.
It's been a year since the company launched the second generation Surface Duo and the company's first Android phone. The company has so far failed to impress people.
