Google pushes Samsung to compete with Apple Watch |
Samsung's semi-annual conference is taking place today. During the event, the company revealed a new smartphone as well as several products and accessories, most notably the new Galaxy Watch 4. It will compete with the Apple Watch.
The new Samsung watch is expected to be a huge success. But the company that will benefit the most from this success will be Google.
Over the years, the Apple Watch has been the best all-round smartwatch. For Android, there are really no competing watches, except for a few versions of watches with the Tizen system developed by Samsung. But Google wants to change this and can't find a better ally than Samsung.
Apple Watch vs. Google and Samsung
There are many rumors that Google is developing smartwatches under the Pixel brand. In addition to the company's massive acquisition of Fitbit. However, Samsung will still be the head start because its watch will be the first watch to run Wear OS.
In fact, the third version of the new Wear OS was developed in collaboration with Samsung. This joint development allows Samsung to add features that previously replaced Tizen while avoiding mistakes common to both companies.
Both Google and Samsung promise longer battery life, a smoother operating system, a better user experience, and great support for third-party apps for the Galaxy Watch with Wear OS.
Compared to the previous version of Wear OS, it can easily provide a better user experience. This is due to the poor quality of these versions. The Tizen system on which Samsung watches are based is acceptable and superior in many ways. However, its pain lies in the lack of apps it supports.
The modest capabilities of Wear OS from Google led smartwatch manufacturers such as OnePlus, Realme, Oppo, and Huawei to develop their own operating systems. It has poor performance and a lot of missing features.
For all these reasons, Samsung and Google are now under tremendous pressure to solve all the problems on the one hand and compete with Apple on the other. Galaxy Watch 4 may not offer all of these rights at the time of publication.
So far, with the exception of the Galaxy Watch 4 and the new Fossil version, there is no confirmed watch that will come with Watch OS 3, the second version of the system.
Can Samsung face the competition alone?
The big picture tells us that smartphone manufacturers don't have to be persuaded by Google's operating system just yet. Since we haven't heard of any collaboration, the Galaxy Watch will be the only watch equipped with this system for a long time.
Thus, the Galaxy Watch is a direct competitor to the Apple Watch, and now the main competitor to Android is Wear OS.
Previous Samsung watches have performed well in all aspects, especially when connected to a Galaxy phone. However, if you connect it to another Android phone, the experience will be worse as there will be a lot of additional components and apps to install.
But that's about to change with the adoption of Wear OS 3, a system built from the ground up that works with all watches and built into Android itself rather than a specific phone.
