CyberDog is the new Xiaomi robot |
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has launched a four-legged robot called CyberDog, an experimental open source machine that the company says has unprecedented capabilities.
Cyber Dog is the latest example of a tech company using squares in robotics. The most notable example of this trend is Boston Dynamics' spot machine.
Launched last year for $74,500, Spot has been used for a variety of purposes from investigating dangerous mines to helping doctors communicate with patients remotely.
The purpose of the Cyber Dog is not clear. In a press release, the company highlighted the open source nature of the device's design. It stated that it initially released only 1,000 units for Xiaomi fans, engineers and robot enthusiasts.
The company hopes that these early adopters will be able to enhance the development and functionality of the four bots and set the price of the bots. The first 1,000 units were priced at CNY 9,999, or about $1,540.
The same press release highlighted CyberDog's pet traits, including its ability to respond to voice commands and follow its owner like a real dog.
A look at the image of the Cyber Dog reveals that the company has not announced the device as a competitor to Sony's robot dog Aibo.
The company said the Cyber Dog is smart enough to perform back somersaults, can trot at 3.2 meters per second (compared to Spots' speed of 3.9 meters per second) and weighs 3 kilograms (compared to the bottom, Spot is 5.2 kilograms). .
Cyber Dog is powered by Nvidia's Jetson Xavier AI platform. Equipped with a number of cameras and sensors.

These sensors include touch sensors, GPS units, ultra-wide-angle fisheye lenses, and the Intel D450 RealSense Depth Sensor Camera. These components enable the robot to navigate semi-autonomously.
Cyber Dog can analyze the environment in real time, create navigation maps, map target and avoid obstacles. By combining human posture tracking and face recognition, CyberDog can track its owner.
The device can also respond to voice commands, including recognition of warning words and instructions. Or it can be controlled via a connected smartphone app.
The Cyber Dog also has three USB-C ports and one HDMI port, which the company claims can be used for dedicated devices. The company recommends equipping the robot with lidar sensors, panoramic cameras and projectors.
