Amazon plans to open supermarkets and other stores |
Amazon is preparing to significantly increase its physical store space, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The retailer plans to open several large, supermarket-style physical retail stores in the United States.
The new store sells clothing, homeware and electronics from major consumer brands. This is an initiative designed to help this technology company expand its influence in these areas.
Of course, buyers can expect private-branded products from Amazon.
The newspaper reported that the first Amazon stores will open in California and Ohio.
The new sales area can be about 30 thousand square meters. But it is much smaller than most supermarkets, which usually occupy about 100,000 square feet.
As the company grows into a one-stop online shopping destination, the move will allow the company to expand into an area that was already paralyzed.
With sales plummeting, this pandemic has already doomed the fate of many supermarkets. Companies such as JC Penney and Neiman Marcus Group have filed for bankruptcy with other well-known companies in the field.
On the flip side, the company's sales have skyrocketed during the pandemic as it has benefited from a growing shift to e-commerce.
His burgeoning business even funded space travel for its founder, Jeff Bezos.
However, the move from Amazon to retail predates the virus. The company started as a bookstore in 2015 and then acquired Whole Foods Market for $13.4 billion in 2017.
Amazon Go cashless stores have recently opened in the US and UK.
Not to mention the four-star boutiques and well-stocked pop-up shops in the mall.
Amazon plans to open small department stores
Department stores are seen as a way for shoppers to experiment before they buy, which is especially useful for items such as clothing.
The company has always suffered losses in this regard. As the Wall Street Journal noted, the only brand in his store is Oscar de la Renta.
The company lost the Nike brand in 2019 and decided to be unique in e-commerce. This has brought rewards to sports shoe makers.
More importantly, these stores also allow the company to showcase its line of electronics, from Fire TVs and tablets to Echo speakers, Ring Home's security suite, and even cloud gaming service Luna.
