YouTube scores big in the European Union

The European Union's High Court ruled on Tuesday that YouTube and other Google platforms may not be responsible for infringing downloads.

The European Court of Justice has ruled that under the current circumstances, online platforms generally do not communicate about copyrighted content that users of these platforms have illegally placed online.

The European Court of Justice added: “If YouTube and other platforms realize that copyrighted content is illegally available on their platforms and do not immediately remove or deny access to it, they are still liable.”

In addition, the European Union recently launched reforms on copyright to adapt its rules to the digital age.

A controversial law at the time forced YouTube, Facebook and other platforms to install filters to prevent users from sharing copyrighted material.

Tuesday's ruling focused on outdated copyright laws in the European Union. The case arose from a lawsuit brought by music producer Frank Peterson on YouTube, which uploaded a recording of his allegations in 2008.

This news is a victory for the platform and other content sharing sites. YouTube has long discussed with artists and musicians how to compensate them fairly for work posted online.

YouTube wins:

Over the years, YouTube has battled copyright infringement, which has angered some producers of popular content on the platform.

Tensions in YouTube copyright lawsuits escalated in 2020, after the company automatically deleted content due to the coronavirus.

A YouTube spokesperson said: "We've paid over $4 billion to the music industry in the past 12 months. 30% of this comes from monetized videos.

"YouTube is a leader in copyright law and helps rights holders get their fair share," he added. So we invested in the most advanced copyright tools and created a new revenue stream for the industry.
