Xbox does not have an exclusive deal with Dolby technology |
Microsoft published a since-deleted post via Xbox Wire France, which says: Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos have been Xbox exclusives for two years.
However, Microsoft said: The publication contains inaccurate information and there is no exclusive agreement.
A company spokesperson stated that the message was incorrectly posted by the local Xbox team.
This article contains inaccurate information about Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision exclusives on Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
He said there is no exclusive agreement on any of these technologies through Xbox. We are honored to work with Dolby to bring Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision to Xbox gamers.
He added, "We'll have more information about Dolby Vision, which is generally available on Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, soon."
The wording of Microsoft's statement suggests that competing platforms such as the PS5 and Nintendo Switch will be able to receive advanced surround sound and HDR technologies in the future, but this has not been confirmed.
Technically, the PS5 supports Dolby Atmos, but only for Blu-ray movies.
Nintendo has traditionally provided only limited support for surround sound or extended display output. However, the company plans to release the updated Switch Pro platform as early as September when Dolby technology is appropriate.
The Xbox platform supports Dolby features:
The Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X support Dolby Atmos technology. Dolby Vision support will soon get broader support.
Microsoft began testing Dolby Vision on Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X in mid-May with testers from the Xbox Insider Team.
Microsoft also introduced Dolby Vision on the Xbox One S and One X platforms, but it was not used in games.
And since September 2020, Dolby has announced that the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X will be the first consoles to support both while playing at the same time.
Dolby reiterated that Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision are not proprietary technologies.
The company said in a statement that Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are not exclusive features for certain gaming platforms. We look forward to working with Microsoft and all of our partners to make Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos widely available to gamers.
