Twitter permanently closes Periscope |
Just six years after its launch, Twitter has shut down the Periscope app, spread live broadcasts to smartphones, removed the service from the App Store, and made most of its features unavailable.
Since March 2015 (a few weeks before the service launched), the Twitter platform has been broadcasting in real time on the live streaming platform. The platform has been in development since March 2014, and Twitter received the app from the public before it was launched.
Twitter announced the upcoming shutdown in December, saying usage was declining and the app was in an unsustainable state of maintenance.
She added: Leaving the app isn't a good thing for the current and former Periscope community, or for Twitter itself.
Periscope still maintains a link to public broadcast archives, but stopped allowing new accounts to be created last year, and app users can still upload data via Twitter.
With the launch of Periscope and another app called Meerkat, live broadcasting became an overnight phenomenon in March 2015.
Although meerkats were noticed, Periscope, with the help of Twitter, was able to quickly emerge from the emergency and become a pioneer in the live broadcast.
However, this phenomenon appears to be just as relaxing as Facebook is eager to broadcast live through its own service and there is no platform to build a dominant community around this feature.
In December 2016, Twitter added the ability to broadcast directly from its app, eliminating the need for Periscope as a standalone service.
With the end of the Periscope app, users can use Twitter Live to broadcast by clicking on the camera option in the app, while brands, publishers, and creatives can use Media Studio for real-time broadcasting.
The app says today is the last day the Periscope app is available. We would like to thank all the developers and viewers who helped make the Periscope community interesting, and we hope to meet you immediately on Twitter.
This is it. Our final goodbye. Today is the last day the Periscope app will be available.
