| Huawei managed to eavesdrop on the Dutch telephone network |
Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant has published a report showing that Chinese tech company Huawei has visited the KPN cellular network in the past and may have heard every conversation.
According to the report, Huawei was able to eavesdrop on the cell phone numbers of telecom service providers at the time.
It also included appeals from then-Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and many Chinese ministers and dissidents.
Huawei is also known for the numbers that have been exploited by Dutch police and Dutch intelligence.
Huawei said it has never misused its Netherlands site to engage in inappropriate behavior. This applies to Huawei employees who have been appointed by KPN to support its business.
She added: Huawei employees do not have unauthorized access to the network and KPN data and are not extracting any data from the network. We always operate with KPN's express permission.
KPN responded by saying that there was no indication that the line was defective or that customer data had been stolen. In this case, the responsible authorities and customers will be notified.
KPN used Huawei technology in 2009 when six Chinese employees for the company worked at its headquarters in The Hague.
This year, the telecom provider asked Capgemini researchers to analyze the risks associated with Huawei and the Chinese company's behavior in KPN.
The local security agency AIVD KPN has repeatedly warned about the dangers of Huawei's spying activities. The results are worrying and internal reports are confidential.
