Huawei is not among the top five in the smartphone market

Smartphone shipments to China have increased significantly, and thus are above the global average for the first quarter of 2021.

According to the latest data from market research firm Strategy Analytics, Chinese brands Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are in the top five global brands.

Deliveries to the Chinese market increased 35% year-on-year compared to around 24% worldwide.

Given the strong consumer demand for legacy devices and the tremendous pressure from Chinese suppliers for 5G mobile phones, the surge in growth is the highest since 2015.

Xiaomi ranked third among the global sellers for the second consecutive quarter, behind Samsung and Apple, and ranked first and second, respectively.

The market share of the Beijing-based company now stands at 15%, an increase of 10% over the previous year.

Strategy Analytics Director of Smartphone Research said: “Xiaomi has maintained strong momentum in India and China, and its expansion into Europe, Latin America and Africa is starting to bear fruit.

Oppo remains the fourth largest smartphone seller in the world alongside its subsidiaries Realme and OnePlus, with an 11% market share.

It is followed by the sister brand of Oppo Vivo, which is also a product from Guangzhou BBK Electronics which increased its shipments by 85% compared to the previous year.

The three Chinese sellers sold 124 million smartphones, accounting for 37% of the global smartphone market.

At the same time, due to continuous efforts in light of strict restrictions imposed by Washington (restricting its channels on the use of American technology), Huawei became the third largest smartphone provider in the world in 2020, and climbed to the top five.

Chinese smartphone suppliers in China and abroad are competing for Huawei's market share thanks to the new 5G devices.

In March, China launched 16 new 5G mobile phone models. A total of 27.5 million 5G smartphones were sold that month, accounting for more than 76% of the total cell phone sales in the country.

Despite the increase in smartphone shipments in the last quarter, the global shortage of chips affecting the smartphone industry may limit some business activities in the coming months.

Strategy Analytics Director of Smartphone Research said: “The lack of chips and limitations in presentation components will not have a major impact on the Big Five brands, but these issues will be a concern for small sellers over the next several quarters.
