Verkada surveillance cameras hacked at Tesla factories |
Verkada, a security startup that provides cloud-based surveillance camera services, suffered a serious security breach, according to the latest Bloomberg report.
Verkada said on its website: It has more than 5,200 customers including cities, universities and hotels.
Cameras are popular because they are combined with software to search for specific people or objects, and users can access the feed remotely via the cloud.
Hackers gained access to more than 150,000 cameras across the company, including cameras in Tesla factories and warehouses, Cloudflare offices, Equinox gyms, hospitals, prisons, schools, and police stations.
Tillie Kottmann, a Swiss software developer and member of a group of hackers who broke into the system, said hackers' goal is to show how common and common the company's security cameras are.
In addition to the real-time feed, the organization claims to have access to the full video archives of all Verkada customers.
A Verkada representative said in a statement to Bloomberg: We have disabled all internal admin accounts to prevent unauthorized access.
He added: Our internal security team and outside security companies are investigating the extent and scope of this potential problem.
The hack is apparently relatively simple as the team can use the username and password that are usually found on the internet to access Verkada's system at the super admin level.
The team gained access to the entire corporate network, including root access for the camera itself, which gave the team access to the internal network of some Verkada clients.
Verkada is proud to offer internet-connected security cameras and pledges to take a software approach to keep security transparent and up to date.
The cloud-connected camera has a simplified web interface that companies can use to monitor their operations and provide facial recognition software (optional).
The range of customers who use Verkada is very large. In addition to companies like Tesla and Cloudflare, the organization can also visit Halifax Health Hospital in Florida, Sandy Hook Elementary School, Madison County Jail, and the Vercada Camera at Wardley Regional Medical Center.
The organization also said that in addition to the viewfinder, you'll also have access to the full list of thousands of Verkada customers and their personal financial information.
