GoPro is relaunching its smartphone app called Quik |
GoPro has released a new version of its flagship smartphone app called Quik.
The new app remains the primary interface for connecting and controlling GoPro cameras, but it also contains some new features, including a feature called Mural, which is similar to your Instagram feed.
This feature is designed to help users organize and save their favorite photos and videos regardless of whether or not the GoPro took photos and videos.
The company released an app called Quik way in 2016 that automatically edits screenshots. However, this app has not been supported for a while and is no longer available for download with the release of the new Quik app.
The auto-edit functionality is still available in the new app, launched on Android and iOS.
It also contains other features such as a video editing suite (including speed unit), themes and filters, and unlimited cloud backup for all high-quality original content posted on the wall feed.
The company charges $ 1.99 a month or $ 9.99 a year for these features, although the main aspects of camera connectivity and app control are still free for those who don't want to pay for new features.
Customers who pay for a GoPro Plus subscription can use Quik's features for free, including unlimited cloud storage, real-time streaming capabilities, and camera sharing.
GoPro CEO Nick Woodman sees the new Quik app as the culmination of GoPro's longstanding effort to diversify its hardware from 2013 to 2014.
He believes that by targeting the apps to a wider audience, not just GoPro users, there are opportunities that can be exploited.
This is the strategy of the original Quik app that allows users to combine photos and videos without using a GoPro.
Woodman said that although the company discontinued the app, the app still had close to 8 million monthly active users.
GoPro has created a complementary camera business with its Plus subscription service, which has nearly 800,000 subscribers at the end of 2020, which translates into annual sales of around $ 40 million.
