Future Samsung watches will use Android instead of Tizen |
Since the Gear 2 line in 2014, Samsung has used its platform called Tizen to power smart home devices and smart watches, giving the company complete control over the experience of multiple devices like the Galaxy. Watch Active and the latest Galaxy Watch.
However, the South Korean company may turn to Wear OS in the near future, and SamMobile and the popular Ice Universe claim Samsung is making a smartwatch that Wear OS could use in place of its usual system.
This is Samsung's first use of the Android platform as a wearable device since early products like Samsung Galaxy Gear and Gear Live.
It is not yet clear what this watch looks like or if it marks a complete transition to Android.
GalaxyClub recently discovered two models, which means that the next generation of Samsung watches will be in two sizes regardless of the platform used.
There is no guarantee that Samsung will actually switch to Android instead of Tizen, but it might make sense to do so.
Although Tizen-based smartwatches (like the Galaxy Watch 3) have basic apps (like Spotify) and people generally like them, there's no doubt that they lack apps.
Tizen's support for third-party apps differs from Wear OS. Thanks to developer support, the new Galaxy Watch will definitely be more useful with Wear OS.
Samsung might think the greater compatibility is worth compromising and undoubtedly helps Google, which doesn't like Apple and Samsung do in mobile devices.
However, this switch can be controversial because Samsung smartwatches have fans, partly due to the unique control system and longer battery life.
If the smartwatch is running Wear OS or other Android systems, this noise may be reduced because Wear OS devices don't cause much fuss.
