The LG Rollable is a real phone |
LG presented the world's first foldable smartphone, the LG Rollable, at CES 2021, the world's largest trade fair for consumer electronics and technology.
After the success of Samsung's foldable smartphones, the South Korean company can lead the competition in its next screen format in the cellular market.
LG released a five-second teaser with an expandable drop-down screen on its smartphone. "The product will be launched later this year," the company said.
LG spokesman Ken Hong said, "Our management wants to prove that this is a real product as there are a lot of rumors about a foldable phone. Given its launch at CES 2021, I can say it will be launched this year."
The LG Rollable includes what is known as a unique resizable screen that can be expanded to a tablet screen instead of a smartphone screen. The scaling process leaves more space on the screen. .
According to the reports, LG is working with Chinese BOE Technology Group to make wraparound displays, and LG has not confirmed the display technology LG is using or the details of the different display sizes.
LG started developing LG foldable phones as part of the company's Project Explorer experience. With this project, the company launched LG Wing smartphones with a rotating design and two OLED screens.
The twisted-pair display is based on flexible OLED technology, BOE provides OLED screens to Huawei smartphones, and Apple has been supplying these screens to iPhones since the second half of last year.
BOE Technology Group is believed to be happy with the partnership with LG as more smartphone customers are required to accommodate OLED capacity which is no longer used due to US sanctions against Chinese companies.
LG's Wrap-around Display comes at a time when the company's smartphone industry is struggling to make money due to stiff competition from market leaders such as Samsung, Huawei and Apple.
LG's mobile division reported an operating loss of $ 135 million in the third quarter from 202.
