| The PS2 games are available on two new Xbox platforms |
Developers can already use RetroArch emulation software to emulate PS2 games on Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S platforms, but not on PS5.
This is due to what's known as "developer mode" which allows users to add emulators such as Windows UWA applications.
This allows users to play Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, PS3, and PS2 games through Microsoft, so gamers don't have to wait to repost their old collections.
Due to backward compatibility restrictions between PS5 and Xbox, PS2 games compatibility with PCSX2 core is very good.
The new version of PS5 is only locally compatible with PS4 games. However, there are some limitations Sony currently only provides the ability to play PS3 and PS2 games through the PS Now Games live streaming service.
Microsoft has not officially supported this type of emulation and continues to support the PCSX2 kernel.
Although the file size limit for games is no more than 2GB, the performance of PS2 games is almost the same as on the original platform, so early results look promising.
Note that adding RetroArch to the Microsoft platform in developer mode is a bit tricky.
Users must pay $ 19 to sign up for the Microsoft Developer Program, then download the app from the store to enable developer mode.
It can then connect to Xbox via the local network using a web browser and add UWA RetroArch files.
Another developer found a way to use the retail version of RetroArch listed as a proprietary app in the Xbox Store. After adding a player's email address to the whitelist, the full version of RetroArch can be downloaded. Right in the game with the icon on the computer, this method removes the file size restrictions.
RetroArch provides solid evidence that the old platform can be emulated on the new platform as Microsoft relies on emulators to run Xbox and Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
