Renault launches an electric sports car |
French car maker Renault (Renault) unveiled a new concept for a sports electric car on Thursday as the company switched to mid-size family cars to improve its position in the auto market.
Under the leadership of new CEO Luca de Meo, the losing company plans to focus on more profitable models, raise prices and achieve significant growth in the electric vehicle industry. .
The company's latest car, the Megane eVision, has large SUV wheels, but with a smaller design. Renault said: It will be the backbone of the "compact" segment it wants to develop and it will be more profitable than small cars.
"The new generation of electric cars will be full of innovations," de Meo said in a statement before the model show.
Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, Renault had been struggling with declining sales as it tried to re-establish tension with its Japanese partner Nissan.
The new electric vehicle will be the first to be based on the CMF-EV platform or automotive engineering developed by Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi.
Renault added that the final production model of the new electric vehicle will be announced in 2021. The company is already building another small electric vehicle, the Zoe.
Sources told Reuters earlier that De Meo was keen to build on the iconic Renault Megane series. He takes office in July and will propose a strategy in January.
In terms of electric vehicles, Mercedes also launched a number of new electric vehicles based on a retractable chassis in early October last year. This allows car manufacturers to adapt their production to different types and shapes of vehicles.
