Pakistan pledges to unblock TikTok after restricting unethical content

The Pakistan Communications Commission said Monday: Pakistan decided to cancel its proposal to ban the sharing of the short video (TikTok) because the company pledged to ban all accounts that "spread obscene and contravening morals."

The move came about 10 days after Pakistan banned TikTok, and the company was unable to block "immoral and indecent" content.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Communications Commission said, "TikTok has agreed to restrict accounts in accordance with local laws." The app has 20 million monthly active users in the country.

According to one of the analysis companies (SensorTower), the app has ranked third in downloads in Pakistan after Facebook and WhatsApp in the past 12 months.

The Pakistan Communications Commission stated that the company can chat with TikTok if it wants to restrict illegal content.

TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, is rapidly gaining popularity by encouraging young users to post short videos. While many countries have raised security and privacy concerns about their relationship with China, its rapid rise has sparked a fire.

In June last year, the app was banned in India (the largest market for service users at the time) due to national security concerns over a border dispute with China. In addition to checking it in other countries / regions, the app may also be blocked in the US like Australia.

The company has long denied that its ties with China pose a security risk to other countries.

Pakistan is predominantly Muslim and its media legislation respects conservative social customs. In July, the communications regulator issued a "final warning" to TikTok about the objectionable content.
