China threatens Sweden after banning Huawei and ZTE from 5G networks |
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Sweden should lift the ban on the proposed 5G spectrum auction by Huawei and ZTE in order to avoid "negative impacts" on its business.
"China expresses its strong dissatisfaction with Sweden," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Gao Legian at a regular press conference today.
On Tuesday, the Swedish Post and Communications Administration banned companies participating in the auction for Huawei and ZTE products scheduled for next month.
"Sweden must adhere to an objective and fair position and correct wrong decisions in order to avoid negative effects on Sino-Swiss economic and trade cooperation and Swedish companies' activities in China."
The Swedish Post and Communications Authority said: It followed the recommendations of the armed forces and security agencies in the country, which described China as "one of the biggest threats to Sweden."
After applying diplomatic pressure from Washington, European governments tightened their control over Chinese companies creating 5G networks. Plaintiffs claim that Beijing could use Huawei devices for spying. Huawei has repeatedly denied that this poses a national security risk.
In July, the UK ordered Huawei to shut down the UK's 5G network completely by 2027, making it one of the first European countries to do so.
