Lenovo releases the ThinkPad with the Linux Fedora version |
Lenovo first released the ThinkPad X1 Carbon on Linux a long time ago, and it's compatible with the Fedora version of the Red Hat community.
ThinkPad computers have been the best laptop choice for Linux users for many years, but the brand abandoned Linux desktop systems in 2008.
Christian Schaller, Senior Software Engineering Manager at Red Hat, wrote, “This is a great achievement for us and Lenovo because this is the first time Fedora has shipped from a laptop from major manufacturers.
"This is the first time that the world's largest laptop maker has shipped a groundbreaking Linux laptop directly to consumers," he added.
(ThinkPad X1 Carbon) is currently only available from Lenovo, but more models will be launched soon and more regions will be added soon.
ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is the first in a new Linux-compatible software package. ThinkPad P1 Gen2 and ThinkPad P53 will be released at a later date.
While ThinkPads are generally intended for business users, Lenovo is happy to sell a Fedora-powered ThinkPad X1 Carbon to home users.
The new ThinkPad X1 Carbon runs on Fedora Workstation 32 that uses the Linux kernel 5.6.6, and Fedora uses this new release (GNOME 3.36) for virtual desktops.
The case is equipped with a 10th Gen Intel Core i5-10210U processor and has 8GB of RAM that can be upgraded to 16GB for an additional $ 149.
For storage, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon comes standard with a 256GB SSD, which can be upgraded to a 1TB SSD for an additional fee of $ 536.
The case has a 14-inch screen and supports the built-in Intel HD Graphics chipset with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Today, desktop Linux supports over 99% of computers, and Lenovo works with third-party hardware component manufacturers to ensure the correct Linux drivers are deployed and that the gaps are closed.
Along with these initiatives, Lenovo joined Dell to support Ubuntu Linux laptops, such as the latest Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition.
Dell offers a wide variety of Linux laptops and workstations.
