Samsung wants to develop a 600-megapixel sensor |
Samsung employees announced that the company plans to develop an unprecedented high-resolution sensor for smartphones.
Samsung is one of the leaders in developing and manufacturing image sensors, as Samsung is already the first company to launch a 64-megapixel camera sensor for smartphones, then 108 megapixels.
The leader of the sensor team of Samsung (Yongin Park) has now published in an editorial on the company's website that the current future goal is to manufacture 600 megapixels sensor with the ability to provide more details, which the human eye cannot see.
According to Park, "Our eyes correspond to a resolution of about 500 megapixels." Now his team wants to develop a sensor that exceeds this precision and is used in many applications outside the field of smartphones.
It should be noted that Samsung launched the latest flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra phone equipped with an ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor. Resolution is 108 MP, but image pixels are 12 MP and 27 MP.
It is believed that it is possible to develop a 600-megapixel image sensor, but it is growing and not suitable for smartphones. This is the challenge that Samsung will face.
One way to do this is to reduce the pixel size because the pixel size in the ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor is about 0.8 meters and was smaller until recently. Then Samsung launched a 0.7 m pixel sensor. The company hopes to be able to further reduce the pixel size.
Park has not set a deadline for the sensor to launch, but given recent developments, the 600-megapixel sensor version may be closer than expected.
