ScanWatch: a hybrid smartwatch that competes with mobile medical devices

At CES 2020, French consumer electronics company Withings unveiled a new hybrid smart watch called ScanWatch that competes with wearable medical devices by combining two health monitoring technologies.

The watch has the ability to perform an electrocardiogram (EKG) to check heart rate, electrical activity and determine the condition of atrial fibrillation. The SpO2 sensor can also measure blood oxygen levels during sleep to monitor sleep apnea.

ScanWatch watches emit light through the wrist blood vessels to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood. Monitoring oxygen levels helps identify hypoxia episodes caused by sleep apnea, and oxygen levels in the blood are associated with other sleep data (such as bedtime). And sleep quality).

Diagnosis of this condition currently requires a sleep study that includes monitoring of respiratory rate, heart rate and brain activity, as well as oxygen levels. However, some studies may suggest that high oxygen levels could be wrist tracking the main stimulant of sleep apnea.

The watch also includes a heart rate monitor to measure irregular heart beats (including atrial fibrillation). When a defect occurs, the watch alerts its wearer and asks them to take an EKG to measure the electrical activity of the heart by touching the sensor. Watch screens and readings are then available in the Health Mate app and on the watch itself.

The company first introduced the ECG feature in the Move ECG watch, which was announced last year. The watch is approved for sale in Europe, but is still awaiting FDA approval and not available in the United States.

This watch has a small PMOLED display that displays steps, sleep signs, calories, average distance, and heart and monitors smartphone warnings, while the Digital Crown allows users to record ECG and SpO2 measurements, and start workout and sitting alerts.

Wiesings said in a press release: ScanWatch will be available in the second quarter of 2020. The 38mm version costs $ 249, and the 42mm version is $ 299.
