This radio Baofeng Pork is my best investment in emergency communications.
I bought this radio because you can contact the outside world in the event of a disaster. Our world today is a terrible place and you never know when we will lose satellites and cell towers. Then we turn to the "old-fashioned ham" radio.
Programming: Let's face it, I am not an expert in programming or using these radios. But Baofeng made it easy for me to learn how to use this radio to communicate with others.
It has everything you need to get started. You can also program all NOAA frequencies and all domestic emergency call frequencies easily.
It is extremely important to set aside time for all Baofeng Radio frequencies. So I bought a programming cable to connect the radio to a computer using a program.
Unfortunately, you must purchase a Baofeng programming cable in order to program all frequencies without any problems. I highly recommend purchasing the most expensive original cables as all other non-raw cables will not work.
Frequency range: Radios have antennas, but if you need longer distances, I recommend buying longer antennas. Once again, I recommend purchasing original products when dealing with Baofeng products. If you need to use this feature in an emergency, it is worth the extra money. However, I can still communicate with my son on his son's radio, about two and a half miles from the original antenna. We are on one level. When we were in the woods, I was able to reach him within a mile. I can't test these radios in town, but I think the band can be cut in half.

Legal: In order to communicate with others on certain radio frequencies, it is necessary to obtain a license for most of the frequencies. Check your local laws and use common sense. No license is required for some frequencies. However, if it is STHF, they will likely not come to you to obtain your license.
