Epson WorkForce ES-400 Document Scanner
I compared three of these Epson scanners to see which one was the best. It got ES-400, ES-500W and DS-1630. I still have a DS-510 that I compared for several years. I am a computer technician and have worked in many small medical offices. I prefer Fujitsu Snapscan scanner, but many offices require scanning to integrate with their software. Fujitsu scanners that work on both devices are very expensive, so I tend to use Epson for offices that require two-stage scanners. I want to know if there is a reason to buy one or the other for the office that I work with.
Old ES-400, Old ES-500W and DS-510 were just document feeders. The new ES-400 and ES-500W have a speed of 35 ppm, up 26 ppm from the DS-510. I am sure you need the USB 3.0 port and the included cable to reach this speed. In addition to being faster than the DS-510, I didn't notice much difference between the old and the new scanner. He works for himself. The procedure is about the same. If you are using an older version of Epson, this will increase the speed, but nothing else.
ES-500W has a wireless network, but it's not fast enough to really work. Yes, you can scan directly to the cloud or the phone. very slow! This is true for all wireless scanners you use. The ES-400 seems to be the same as the Wi-Fi Offload Scanner, so we'll buy more ES-400 Scanners. It's only $ 50, so I'm sure some customers will choose ES-500W just because they think they can use wifi. Based on previous experience with scanners, do not use Wi-Fi scanning.
DS-1630 includes flatbed feeder and document feeder. It's a very interesting mix. I think some offices may want to be flat. But after playing this, I don't know if it will be useful. It is slower than other scanners at 25 pages per minute. Since the glass size is up to 8.5 x 11, it also has a lot of space and is not suitable for office use. Most offices that I work with do not require a lot of units. In addition, they have large capacity printers so they can use flatbed printers when needed. I work with some graphic designers who need a flat screen but need a better scanner than that and don't need a document feeder. (For graphic designers, we offer Epson flatbed scanners.) Many offices use desktop scanners to stay in the office quickly and comfortably, and you don't like them here. I am sure there is this enthusiast, but I think it will be more interesting before using it.

The procedure for all of these scanners is almost the same. Twain works fine and can integrate with other programs that you scan. Epson is good, but not as easy as Fujitsu Snapscan. Using Snapscan, I set default location and scan settings, then I just press instant scanner button to desired location. If you want to name the file, they can do so. Here in Epson, I have to finish the process of opening the program and clicking on more buttons than I want. It will just slow down. If I don't need twins, I'll buy Snapscans. If I need Twain, I can buy Epson without using the software.
While all of these devices are completely reliable, I have found that Epson scanners cannot last as long as the Snapscan scanners. My office replaced Snapscan 10 years ago because it is out of date (these devices are widely used). Using an Epson scanner, I found that I had got help for 2 to 5 years. They are not. Epson scanners can meet my needs and will continue to buy. I think Epson is more reliable than Fujitsu scanner.
In the end, I like the new scanner. I see no reason to switch from an old Epson scanner unless the 25% speed boost is enough. If you need dual scanning, I think Epson Scanner is your best choice.
